Review: Is ‘Cinema Paradiso’ An Italian Cinema Masterpiece Or Overrated Schmaltz?

Cinema Paradiso, won an Oscar for Best Foreign film back in 1990. It’s a film about Salvatore, a disillusioned filmmaker (Jacques Perrin) who travels back to his hometown for the funeral of his dear friend (and film projectionist) Alfredo (Philippe Noiret). With a sweeping Ennio Morricone score, beautiful story, and a sure storytelling hand from director Giuseppe Tornatore, what could go wrong? I have loved this movie since its release, but CinemAddicts hosts Bruce Purkey and Eric Holmes found the film too schmaltzy for its own good! Check out their review below!

During the review, I recount my own experiences with Cinema Paradiso. A couple of close friendships were formed by a mutual love of this movie, and I have nothing but love for the films of Giuseppe Tornatore (which include Malena and the overlooked The Star Maker).

Would love to hear your thoughts on Cinema Paradiso. This is a widely beloved movie, but there are some (including Bruce and Eric) who feel it is overrated!! Comment below!

For details on where to watch Cinema Paradiso, check Just Watch. If you have not seen the movie, the theatrical cut is the superior (and much more resonant) version.

Listen to our latest episode of CinemAddicts which features Bruce and Eric’s tear down of Cinema Paradiso!! Other movies covered include Dusk For A Hitman and The Coffee Table.
