Directed by Marco Bellocchio, “Kidnapped: The Abduction of Edgardo Mortara” is based on a true story on how seven-year-old Edgardo is taken from his Jewish family by the Pope’s soldiers. Set in 1858, Edgardo is secretly baptized by his nurse and is converted to Catholicism.

The narrative also centers on Edgardo’s parents’ attempts to get their son back. Support from the international Jewish community and public opinion is on their side. But will the overwhelming power of the Church and the Pope win out and keep Edgardo Mortara raised in the Catholic faith?
