The latest Find Your Film episode is up, as hosts Bruce Purkey, Eric Holmes, and I have several films to recommend this week. Cringe driven comedy (I Love My Dad), body horror (Tin Can), horror/thriler (Slapface), and a Predator prequel (Prey) are on the menu!

Releasing Friday on Hulu, Prey is set 300 years ago and has been known as a Predator prequel. That said, the heart of the story centers on Naru (Amber Midthunder, in a standout performance), a Comanche woman who tries to protect her people from an alien predator. Naru is still trying to prove her mettle as a warrior, and though she is a formidable tracker, she is overshadowed by the male hunters.

Dan Trachtenberg (10 Cloverfield Lane) directs Prey, and even if the Predator franchise is not for you, this film can still be thoroughly enjoyed. There are several jaw dropping action sequences sequences, and Naru’s journey is a compelling watch. My rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️½.

I Love My Dad is penned, directed and headlined by James Morosini. Based on Morosini’s own experience, the narrative centers on a manipulative father (Patton Oswalt) who catfishes his son (Morosini) by impersonating a waitress (Claudia Sulewski). All three of us had different reactions to the feature, and Eric Holmes was the flick’s biggest fan. Holmes’ rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I have a scheduled interview with Morosini and Sulewski today, and I will be posting that interview later this week. I Love My Dad hits theaters August 5 and comes out on Digital August 12.

If you are in need of an uncompromising horror/thriller that is resonant (and heartbreaking), Slapface may fit the bill. Streaming on Shudder and now available on DVD, Digital HD, and VOD, the story centers on Lucas (August Maturo), a young boy who has a complex friendship with a monster. Abused by his brother (Mike Manning) and bullied by three girls (Chiara D’Ambrosio, Bianca D’Ambrosio), Lucas must find a way to deal with his trauma. The monster should be a threat to Lucas as well, but maybe this creature has other plans in mind. All three of us recommend Slapface, and a spoiler talk of the feature will be released on Find Your Film later this week.

Eric Holmes and I interviewed Slapface director/writer Jeremiah Kipp this week, and it was a very insightful chat (on his part, of course!):

Bruce Purkey and Eric Holmes absolutely flipped for Tin Can, a body horror thriller/sci that hits theaters August 5 and On Demand August 9. Directed and co-penned by Seth A. Smith, the narrative centers on a scientist named Fret (Anna Hopkins) who is trapped inside a small metal chamber. A fungal plague has taken a grip on humanity, and Fret was on the verge on finding a cure. Now stuck with tubes in her body and confined in her cell, Fret is determined to escape and figure out why her fate was almost (as the poster suggests) “sealed.”

Although Bruce and Eric gave Tin Can ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️, they point out that the film is not for everyone. This is definitely a challenging feature, but many cinephiles (myself included) will be immersed by its claustrophobic world building and ultimate execution. The ending moment is pretty memorable and, depending on your interepretation, can either be mortifying or inspiring!
