The Royal Hotel centers on Hanna (Julia Garner) and Liv (Jessica Henwick), best friends who are backpacking in Australia. Flush out of cash, the pair take a job as bartenders of a pub (named the Royal Hotel). Set in a remote Outback mining town, the environment is dominated by rowdy locals who don’t believe in personal boundaries. Bruce Purkey and I reviewed the movie this week on CinemAddicts, and we both recommend this Kitty Green directed feature.
The Royal Hotel co-stars Hugo Weaving (The Matrix) as the bar owner who doesn’t pay his bills and James Frecheville (Animal Kingdom) as a moody local who has eyes for Liv. Listen to our review of the feature on this week’s CinemAddicts Podcast:
The feature is inspired by the documentary Hotel Coolgardie, which centered on two Finnish girls’ experiences of working behind the bar at a mining town. If you are in the mood for uncomfortable thrillers set in the Outback, the cult feature Wake in Fright is also one to watch.
The Royal Hotel director Kitty Green previously directed Garner in the 2019 feature The Assistant.
