Whether it’s playing Nino Brown (New Jack City) or BladeWesley Snipes knows how to channel his inner tough guy, and that skill set is on display with the new TV series The Player

The series centers on an ex-military operative named Alex (Philip Winchester) who serves as the pawn in a high stakes betting game that is coordinated by Mr. Johnson (Snipes), a dangerous pit boss who doesn’t have any scruples. Alex’s job is to stop crimes before they are committed as wealthy and powerful figures bet for or against his respective missions.

“(Mr. Johnson) is morally ambiguous,” said Snipes. “And that lends itself to a lot of possibilities and the character can go a lot of different ways and you can see a wide range of his personality and emotions.”

During the interview, Snipes said that he would love to headline a biopic, and he was actually close to making a movie about the Godfather of Soul with Spike Lee! Check out the video below:

The Player, co-starring Charity Wakefield,  premieres Thursday, September 24 on NBC (10 pm et/pt).
