“The Carmichael Show’s” third season returns May 31 on NBC, and I’ll definitely be binge-watching the show on Netflix. Along with the program’s homage to Norman Lear’s seminal All in the Family, it also features Tiffany Haddish, a comedian and actress who, in the video below, drops the mic on a ton of topics. It’s an inspiring and candid several minutes – the vid’s available after the jump.

In Dying Laughing, Haddish elaborated on how comedy essentially changed her life. I really loved the doc, and her interview was one of the film’s standouts. I prefaced the question with the Dying Laughing reference as I asked her about how comedy, as well as working on The Carmichael Show, has shaped her as a person. In several minutes, she explained why comedy is her “safe haven” and what makes The Carmichael Show so unique.

Last but not least, she also talks about her bond with her TCS co-star and best friend Lil Rel Howery. I transcribed a portion of her comments, but trust me, there’s a lot of stuff that she covers in the conversation. Check out the video for Haddish’s open-hearted and engaging take on comedy and true friendship:

“Comedy is my existence. It’s my safe haven. It’s the thing I feel like that saved me from being a typical statistic of, you know, like a baby mama in and out of jail. When my social worker made me get into that comedy camp, it set a foundation for me where it’s the first time a man ever told me I was beautiful and I didn’t feel like he was going to do something bad to me. It was the first time I felt welcomed into something . . . Comics, as crazy as we all are, and as messed up as we all are, we have love for each other because we know what it’s like to be on that stage all alone. And trying to touch somebody’s heart and get them to laugh – you’re touching people’s hearts. (Getting people to laugh) is so hard . .

To be on (The Carmichael Show) is like a super huge dream come true because I never thought – like that 15-year-old girl – man she never thought she’d be sitting here. I’m sitting next to my best friend, working on a TV show that I freakin’ love – I was about to cuss (laugh) – and to be doing what I love. I love to make people laugh. That’s an emotion that you invoke and a lot of times I want to cry, but I figure (out) what is it about this situation that I want to cry so bad – and then try to find the funny in that. I feel better and it’s like a healing.

To be a part of this show – I truly believe we are healing the nation (by talking about) things that are taboo that you’re not allowed to talk about – we’re talking about it and I’m working with some of the best comedians in the game. There are so many comics on this show – I don’t know any sitcom that has this many comics that’s on the air right now that is this good. That has excellent writing. Excellent acting. Excellent timing. This show is amazing. It’s like my dream come true!” Tiffany Haddish

Here’s the vid with Haddish and Howery (the video features a pretty funny Geo Metro story – so now you definitely have to watch!!):

Regarding Haddish’s last comments about she and Lil Rel taking things over on the awards front, well here’s proof of Haddish’s prophetic comments from over the weekend:

As for Haddish, she’ll be seen this summer in Girls Trip:

The Carmichael Show, starring Haddish and Howery, returns May 31st on NBC (9/8c).
