‘The Voice’ Blinds: Courtney Harrell, Blaine Long Lead Coaches Final Picks

Advertisements

This is where things get interesting. It’s the final night of the Blind Auditions on The Voice, which means the remaining competitors are subjected to a little more discerning ear from each of the coaches. Who will get the nods? Who will be criminally overlooked? Which coach will be left unable to turn when arguably the perfect singer for their team performs? Let’s recap one of The Voice’s most entertaining nights:

Team Alicia

Siblings Whitney and Shannon took the coaches by surprise with their vocal harmonizing on a cover of the Dixie Chicks’ “Landslide” as originally done by Fleetwood Mac. The sisters have lived apart over the past year, but are looking at The Voice as the opportunity to come back together and see what can do. Adam is the first to turn, quickly followed by Blake and Miley. And Alicia is the last to turn. While they admit in the pre-package they would love to be on Blake’s team, Alicia does the harder sell and they bite.

Kylie Rothfield has been a music fan since youth and has been performing from a young age. She attended Berklee College of Music and while things had gone well, she once suffered a vocal hemorrhage.  She eventually got her voice back, and is back on her path to finding music stardom. She takes on OneRepublic’s “Wherever I Go,” making it more soulful while playing guitar during her set as well. With one spot left on their teams, Blake and Alicia decide to do battle over Kylie. They both pitch well for Kylie, but she ends up choosing Alicia, thus completing Alicia’s roster of vocalists.

Team Adam

Johnny Rez reveals that he had a history of dealing with excess, but has used music to help him on his path of sobriety. During his performance, Johnny chooses the Goo Goo Dolls’ “Iris,” feeling the track has a personal meaning to him. He performs with his guitar and  changes the arrangement a bit to fit his lower register, but the unique quality of his voice shines through and he breaks out a falsetto in the song showing his range. Adam and Blake both debate before getting in late. He admits to loving country, but also covering Maroon 5, but in the end Adam offers him some coaching in his pitch and that ultimately wins him over.

Natasha Bure is the daughter of hockey star Valeri Bure and actress Candace Cameron Bure. As a teen, she’s just getting her start in music, and she decides to take on Elvis Presley’s “Can’t Help Falling in Love,” but adding her own spin on it. Her lilting voice and inflections make it an interesting song choice and one that gets Adam’s turn fairly early on. However, none of the other coaches turn and Adam admits that he felt her nerves got the best of her.

With Alicia and Blake’s teams full, both Adam and Miley went head-to-head for Ponciano Seoane. The singer had the rasp and the grit that fit perfectly on Philip Phillips song “Home,” and his performance was pretty solid throughout. Adam went for the hard sell, and ultimate won over Ponciano.

Team Miley

Maye Thomas grew up the daughter of a local radio DJ, and honed her love of classic rock, pop and country. She chooses the pop song “Roses” by The Chainsmokers and views herself as an indie pop artist working in Nashville. Her voice offers a bit of lilt, but also some power as well, and Adam gets in on Maye fairly early. Meanwhile, Miley hears something in a bit of the song’s rappy delivery at one point that gets her turn. Adam gets in, but realizes he’s in trouble when she reveals she’s from Oklahoma and lives in Nashville. He does his best, but knows that ultimately Miley is the right choice.

With Miley being the final coach with a spot open, she could have her pick of the remaining performers. In the end, it was the smooth and melodic performance of Justin Bieber’s “Love Yourself” by Josette Diaz that earned her chair turn. Josette also played guitar on the track and her performance was worthy of the final chair turn.

Team Blake

Courtney Harrell was a singer, who put that in the background while she raised her son. But in the interim, she has written for a number of popular artists. Now that her son is in her teens, she’s sang background for several artists, but is singing on her own for the first time in 15 years. She takes on James Bay’s “Let It Go” and there are a few nerves early on, but there’s no denying the voice delivers something more than just a soulful vocalist. Blake gets in, and as soon as she hits a power note, Alicia hits her buzzer about seven times in appreciation. Blake feels like she’ll pick Alicia, but does a hard sell with heaps of compliments and complete belief in what she can do. While Alicia also does a solid sell, it’s Blake’s enthusiasm that wins her over and surprises just about everyone.

One of the older competitors in the The Voice blinds, Blaine Long showed plenty of seasoning and wowed the coaches with a little different rendition of John Hiatt’s “Have a Little Faith in Me.” He got a three chair turn, with Alicia Keys admitting she loved what she heard, but her team was already full. Long reveals that he’s a singer / songwriter and that garners the attention of all three coaches, but ultimate Blake has the best sell and you could say that he won the night with the additions of Harrell and Long.

And yes … once again, there’s a dreaded Voice montage segment. We get bits of Tarra Layne singing “Black Velvet” before being picked up by Blake, Charity Bowden delivering “Girl Crush” and winning over Miley, JSOUL taking on Sam Smith’s “Stay With Me” to the delight of Adam, and Belle Jewel reworking the Simple Minds favorite “Don’t You” into a swinging little number that caught the attention of Alicia Keys.
