Along with being the Senior Pastor of The Potter’s House, T.D. Jakes is also a bestselling writer, screenwriter, and producer. Jakes’ latest producing effort, Miracles From Heaven, is the inspiring true story of Anna Beam’s (Kylie Rogers) courageous fight against an incurable disease. Jennifer Garner co-stars as Anna’s mother Christy Beam.

The film, now playing nationwide, had a solid Wednesday opening and is drawing moviegoers in need of a well told, faith-based movie. That being said, the picture also has universal appeal, as it details the Beams’ determined fight to never lose hope during Anna’s harrowing (and ultimately uplifting journey).

During the interviews for Miracles from Heaven, T.D. Jakes, who also produced the well received film Heaven Is For Real, explained why faith is a topic that is an integral aspect of filmmaking and storytelling:

“If you look at art down through history, if you strip religion out of art, look how much we would lose. From the Sistine Chapel on down. You cannot talk about 21st century life and not talk about faith and politics and all of the other things that we have – and I think we have an obligation to do a real depiction.

The real issue is doing something that is qualitative. I don’t think that society is concerned about where it comes from if it is a qualitative film. I think the Church is starting to decide that we are not going to leave our stories to be told in the hands of other people. We are going to assume responsibility of telling our own stories.”

Part of the film’s theme centers on making a difference in a person’s life, even if that person is a stranger or an acquaintance. In the clip below, Jakes talks about how that priceless sentiment manifested itself during a trip home to visit his mother. Click on the media bar below to hear T.D. Jakes:

Co-starring Queen Latifah and Martin Henderson, Miracles from Heaven was directed by The 33 filmmaker Patricia Riggen.
