Sean Penn stars in The Gunman, playing an ex-Special Forces soldier and military contractor who travels throughout Europe in an attempt to clear his name. Javier Bardem, Idris Elba, and Jasmine Trinca co-star in the feature which opens nationwide Friday, March 20.

Penn’s initial forays into filmmaking came from making Super 8 films with his brother (late actor Chris Penn), and even though he was initially interested in directing, Penn’s initial success came from acting.
“It caught me, the process of it caught me for a time,” said Penn, who worked last year directing Charlize Theron and Javier Bardem in The Last Face.
