Kai Luke Brummer makes his feature film debut in Moffie, the story of a young man who endures two years of military service in 1981 South Africa. It’s an intense role that Brummer knocks out of the park, and he talked to Deepest Dream about this first rate narrative.
Nicholas van der Swart’s (Kai Luke Brummer) time in the military contains its share of challenges. Along with the physically and emotionally taxing aspects of being in the military, Nicholas is also gay. The Afrikaans word “moffie” is a homophobic slur, and his environment takes a brutally unforgiving and crippling approach to homosexuality.
In the interview below, Brummer talks about the reactions he has received on Moffie, working with director/writer Oliver Hermanus, and his love for the movies Forrest Gump and the Claire Denis movie High Life.
