This week’s Find Your Film contains a documentary (Rebel Hearts) and hybrid feature (I Carry You With Me) that we all love. I also enjoyed the thriller The Evil Next Door (Eric & Bruce had differing opinions) and Eric and I absolutely flipped over Werewolves Within (Bruce hated it). Check out our latest episode for more info on these features!
Directed by Pedro Kos, Rebel Hearts centers on a group of nuns (The Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary) who fought the patriarchal system of the Catholic Church. Pop artist Corita Kent, Anita Caspary, Helen Kelley and Pat Reif were among the women determined to grow their community under the restricting leadership of Cardinal McIntyre. Produced by Shawnee Isaac-Smith (who spent over 20 years nurturing the project), Judy Korin and Kira Carstensen, Rebel Hearts hits select theaters today. It hits discovery+ on June 27.
The Evil Next Door centers on Shirin (Dilan Gwyn), a stepmother who is finding it difficult to connect to her son Lucas (Eddie Eriksson Dominguez). When her partner Fredrik (Linus Wahlgren) leaves them for work, they must face an evil spirit that may be living in their new home. Directed by Tord Danielsson and Oskar Mellander, the feature grabbed my attention from the start. I loved the movie’s slow build and characterization of Shirin (she’s not exactly the most affection of stepmoms), and the final act pulled everything together. Co-hosts Bruce Purkey and Eric Holmes did not enjoy the movie (Holmes praised the performance of the child), but they added that fans of ghost tales may appreciate the feature. The feature is now in theaters and available On Demand.
Eric and I absolutely love Werewolves Within, a horror/comedy/mystery directed by Josh Ruben and starring Sam Richardson and Milana Vayntrub. Set in a small town named Beaversfield, the narrative centers on Finn (Richardson), a forest ranger who is new to the area. Striking up an immediate bond with postal worker named Cecily (Vayntrub), he attempts to acclimate to environment.
