Several days after watching Dachra, my mind is still on a couple of images I probably will never shake. Depending on your cinematic tastes, that can be a great or a horrible thing. On the latest Find Your Film podcast, I praise the Tunisian horror thriller and co-hosts Bruce Purkey and Eric Holmes also recommend the feature.
Dachra centers on three journalists (Yassmine Dimassi, Aziz Jebali, Bilel Slatnia) who believe they have an interesting story on their hands as they investigate a mentally unstable woman named Mongia (Hela Ayed). Their quest leads them to a mysterious mountainous town where most of the villagers don’t speak. Their all too friendly host (Hedi Mejri) has ulterior motives, and the journalists must escape the town or suffer a dismal fate.
Directed by Abdelhamid Bouchnak for a scant $80,000, Dachra contains a healthy share of horrific and memorable moments. Bouchnak’s immersive visual style and unique framing of certain shots also added to the overall excellence of the flick. Although I ended up loving the movie much more than Bruce and Eric, they both were on board for the film’s violent and terrifying third act.
