Francis Ford Coppola’s Apocalypse Now is one of cinema’s most acclaimed features, and whether you saw the original cut or the Redux version, the 40th anniversary 4K Ultra HD release should be the end all and be all. Why? Well, Coppola says in the intro to the Apocalypse Now Final Cut trailer that this version is the one he prefers.

During the intro before the Apocalypse Now Final Cut trailer, Francis Ford Coppola says that this 40th anniversary version is shorter than Redux (213 minutes) but longer than the theatrical release (153 minutes). Though it will be available for home entertainment purposes later this month, fans of the film can check Apocalypse Now Final Cut in select theaters August 15 and 18.
Based on Joseph Conrad’s novel Heart of Darkness, Apocalypse Now centers on Captain Benjamin J. Willard (Martin Sheen), an Army officer tasked with tracking down Colonel Walter E. Kurtz (Marlon Brando) in Cambodia. The ensemble cast includes Harrison Ford, Scott Glenn, Laurence Fishburne, and Dennis Hopper. Years ago I interviewed Scott Glenn (for 1995’s Tall Tale) and he recounted how he lived for months with the Ifugao tribe in the Philippines in preparation for the film (I wish I still had the audio for that interview!).
Apocalypse Now Final Cut arrives on 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack and Digital 4K Ultra HD on August 27. Along with new bonus material, the release will also feature the original and Redux versions.
