Writer/director Adam Sigal’s Nandor Fodor and the Talking Mongoose absolutely captivated me with its unpredictable narrative. A deft mixture of comedy and philosophical insight, the narrative centers on Nador Fodor’s (Simon Pegg) attempts to investigate whether a talking mongoose is actually real. Sigal delved into his approach in crafting this terrific feature.

Nandor Fodor was a real life person, and he had a celebrated career as a psychologist. Fodor’s investigation of a talking mongoose on the Isle of Man actually did happen. So although the big draw of this film lies in the comedy and its talented ensemble (it also co-stars Minnie Driver and Christopher Lloyd), Nandor Fodor and the Talking Mongoose has a surprising level of depth.

“I definitely intended it to have some deeper meaning, for sure,” said Adam Sigal, who previously wrote and directed the 2022 feature Chariot. “When I wrote this script, I was going through a lot of deep things in my own life. Sort of the synthesis of how this script and film came about was that I heard this story about Nandor Fodor and a talking mongoose on the Isle of Man, which is ridiculous. I always thought it was a funny thing but then it wasn’t until I married it into some very personal, religious experiences that it became what it is. So there is some very important, to me at least, messages in the film.”
