Filmmaker Xavier Gens (Cold Skin, The Divide) is one of the several directors (Corin Hardy, Gareth Evans) behind Gangs of London. The first season has just been released on Blu-ray and DVD via RLJE Films. In the interview, Gens discussed working with Gangs of London actors Michelle Fairley and Sope Dirisu. Plus, he delves into his love of genre filmmaking. Take a listen below!
Created by filmmaker Gareth Evans (The Raid: Redemption) and Matt Flannery, Gangs of London features Joe Cole as Sean Wallace, a man who’s searching for the people who killed his father Finn (Colm Meany).
***Check out my interview with Xavier Gens on Apple Podcasts:
The killing reverberates throughout several big crime families, as Finn was the hub amidst a multi-layered business empire. Along with seeking revenge, Sean must find a way to take his father’s place at the table. Sope Dirisu is Elliot, a new employee of Sean’s who gradually rises up the ranks. Lucian Msamati co-stars as Ed Dumani and Paapa plays his son Alexander; the Dumanis are lifelong allies and partners of the Wallaces.
Xavier Gens directed episodes 6-8 of the series, and he talked about working on Gangs of London. He also geeked out and talked about some of his favorite filmmakers: Paul Verhoeven (Robocop), John Carpenter (The Thing), and Tobe Hooper (The Texas Chainsaw Masscare).
After binge watching Gangs of London (I really love this show), I’ll be checking out more of Gens’ work (his movies include The Divide, Cold Skin, and Hitman).
Special features on the Blu-ray include the featurettes “An Inside Look at the World, The Families, The Action, The Soldier” and “Anatomy of an Action Scene: Pub Fight & Elliot vs Len (featuring commentary from Gareth Evans).
Gangs of London: Season 1 is now out on DVD and Blu-ray via RLJE Films.
