Sarah Wayne Callies discusses why she believes “vanity is the enemy of art.” Plus, I asked her if directing has been a lifelong passion:

Even with successful runs on Prison Break, The Walking Dead, and Colony, Sarah Wayne Callies is determined to keep pushing forward and not rest on her creative laurels. Inspired by Bruce Feiler’s book of the same name, Council of Dads centers on a family man (Tom Everett Scott) who, after a health scare, calls upon several of his trusted friends to become “back-up” fathers to lend support to his family.

“I realized I wanted to be part of something storywise, whether it was as an actor, producer, director or writer that left people with the sense that they could do it,” said Callies, who plays Scott’s wife Robin in the series. “They could get through it, they could be there for someone else. They could challenge parts of themselves they didn’t like. They could uplift.”

Callies had several directing gigs lined up (she has helmed an episode of Colony and Unbreakable), but after reading the teleplay for Council of Dads, she was hooked and boarded a plane to Savannah, Georgia to start production.

Council of Dads, co-starring Clive Standen, Michael O’Neill, and Michele Weaver, premieres Tuesday March 10 on NBC (10 pm et/pt).
