Had the chance to catch Down A Dark Hall last week, and one of the film’s strongest aspects lies in the performance of Victoria Moroles. Audio of Moroles discussing what makes the thriller and her seemingly unlikable character unique is below!

Based on the YA novel from Lois Duncan (I Know What You Did Last Summer), Down A Dark Hall centers on Kit (AnnaSophia Robb), a rebellious young girl who is sent to the Blackwood Boarding School. Madame Duret (Uma Thurman) is the enigmatic mistress to Kit and several other girls who are supposedly in need of a little discipline and focus. Victoria Moroles (Teen Wolf) is Veronica, a student who ends up being the most confrontational of the bunch. Though her colleagues eventually become obsessed with their respective talents (Kit becomes fixated with playing the piano and co-star Isabelle Fuhrman, playing Izzy, becomes a math prodigy), Veronica eventually becomes the odd person out.

“She’s had a really hard life and she’s gone through a lot with having to grow up really fast,” said Moroles. “She has a lot of insecurities and she doesn’t like to be vulnerable. She puts up the mask, and the snide remarks and the attitude. It’s not really who she is, I just think she doesn’t know what to do with herself in those moments . . . I feel a lot of people can relate to that – I most of the time can to because I have a hard time breaking down my walls. I feel people who can relate to that will watch her and say, ‘yeah I know how you feel.’

Nurturing these gifts comes with a catch, however, as Kit begins to suspect Blackwood Boarding School may be more than just a learning institution. Directed by Buried filmmaker Rodrigo Cortés, Down A Dark Hall is a paranormal thriller that’s blessed with a solid pacing and an unexpected twist (at least I didn’t see this one coming!).

Take a listen below to hear Moroles talk about the “different journeys” that are part of Down a Dark Hall’s narrative:
