The Hate U Give centers on Starr Carter (Amandla Stenberg) who attends a predominantly white and well to do prep school. Growing up in a low income neighborhood places her in the middle of two worlds, and it all comes to a head after the tragic shooting of her best friend Khalil (Algee Smith) by a cop. Finding her voice and standing up for what she believes in is of utmost importance to Starr, even as she faces pressure from all sides. The ensemble includes Regina Hall, Issa Rae, KJ Apa, Sabrina Carpenter, Common, and Anthony Mackie.

Extras on the disc include:

  1. Extended Scenes – (“Maverick and Seven Protecting Their Home,” “Uprising,” and “Seven’s Graduation”)
  2. Featurettes – (“Starting a Conversation,” “The Talk,” “Code Switching,” “The Heart of Georgia,” “Thank U Georgia). “Starr; Shine Your Light” is available on Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD
  3. Commentary – Audio from director George Tillman, Jr., Amandla Stenberg, Russell Hornsby, Angie Thomas, and Craig Hayes.

***I’ve thoroughly enjoyed what I’ve seen from George Tillman Jr. (specifically Soul Food and Men of Honor), and maybe this film will even exceed his previous work. As of this posting, The Hate U Give has a tomatometer rating of 97%, and it’s one of the films that I’m really excited to check out. If you’ve seen the flick, I’d love to hear your thoughts on the project!
