Penned and directed by Whiplash filmmaker Damien Chazelle, La La Land is a on ode to the sheer fantastical wonder of Los Angeles set in musical form. We follow the romance of jazz musician Sebastian (Ryan Gosling) and struggling actress Mia (Emma Stone) as they traverse the neon, surreal wonders of “la la land,” a world which, though filled with romance, also posses its share of dark undercurrents.
During interviews for The Nice Guys, Ryan Gosling spent a few moments discussing the film, which hits theaters in December 2 (it initially opens in limited release):
**The first Gosling quote deals with the shooting of La La Land:
“Most of them are in practical locations. There’s one where we had a whole freeway overpass for a day and people were dancing in cars. It was pretty amazing. And he shot the film in long takes (so) there’s not a lot of cuts in the musical numbers.”
“I really had a special experience on that movie. Damien’s an incredible filmmaker and it was a big undertaking for him. For his second film to take something like that on and just so many talented people. I’m very excited for people to see the film.”
“Emma and I practiced for I think a month and a half just for one scene and because we had to do it in magic hour and we would have only four or five takes and we had to get it in one of them.”

***If you’re excited about La La Land, I’d suggest checking out Francis Ford Coppola’s underrated musical One From The Heart. It’s pretty obvious that it serves as inspiration for Chazelle’s highly anticipated work. I’ll definitely mention La La Land this week on CinemAddicts.
