“The challenge in playing a bad guy is you want to humanize them,” says Ventimiglia, whose TV work includes the beloved Heroes and the film noir series Mob City. “You don’t want to make them a villain (who’s) twisting their mustache with a tied up dame on a railroad track. You actually want to make them believe in what they’re doing.”

In the audio clip below, the actor offers proof of his Batman love,  as he recalls a special birthday party from his youth:

Another gratifying aspect of Ventimiglia’s “Gotham” experience is the idea of passing the torch to a younger generation of Caped Crusader fans:

It’s absolutely fun in the way that I feel like I can give back to maybe a 13-year-old or an 8-year-old and they’re going to look at what I do or what I’m up doing with my friends on a show and go ‘Oh wow, that’s what I want to do.’ So there is that magic – there is that excitement of passing it along .

Gotham’s new episode, “The Anvil or The Hammer,” airs tonight on FOX (8 pm et/pt).

***Also – if you want to see Ventimiglia do an amusing, comedic turn as a lecherous and overly confident theater employee, check out the comedy/drama Walter, which was released this year. The flick also stars Andrew J. West (who plays the titular character), Virginia Madsen, and William H. Macy.
