Co-showrunners Eric Kripke (Supernatural) and Shawn Ryan (The Shield and criminally underrated Last Resort) spearhead the ambitious series Timeless. Matt Lanter is Wyatt, a soldier who teams with a history professor (Abigail Spencer) and scientist (Malcolm Barrett) to travel back in time and save America from a potential doomsday. Though Lanter loves that the series has an “adventurous spirit,” he also talks about some of the program’s deeper themes. To hear Lanter, go to the jump.
“The adventurous spirit of the script just jumped off the page,” said Lanter, whose previous credits include Star-Crossed and 90210. “It reminds me so much of the early Spielberg stuff. It reminds me of Star Wars and in particular, my character reminds me of Han Solo and Indiana Jones. This team behind it is an incredible, proven team and the genre stuff for me is fascinating as well.”
A future episode of Timeless deals with the assassination of President Lincoln, and like one of Star Trek’s most popular episodes (the Harlan Ellison penned The City on the Edge of Forever), sometimes changing the past may not be in humanity’s best interest.

Timeless premieres tonight on NBC (10/9c).
