Director Alejandro G. Iñárritu and cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki won Oscars last year for their towering achievement Birdman: Or (The Unexpected Virtue Of Ignorance) and, for my money, there’s no better 1-2 punch behind the camera. The trailer to their latest film The Revenantwas recently released.

The story, inspired by true events, centers on Hugh Glass (Leonardo DiCaprio) who is attacked by a bear and left to die by his own hunting team. Though battered beyond belief and emotionally scarred by the betrayal of confidant John Fitzgerald (Tom Hardy), Glass is determined to survive through the American wilderness at any cost.

Though the trailer gives viewers insight into Glass’ perilous journey, Chris Connelly’s Grantland piece on the making of The Revenant is a must read, as it delves into the creative motivations of DiCaprio and Iñárritu and explores the inspiration behind the story (the real Glass was mauled by a grizzly bear in 1823 South Dakota, and his story is pretty much the stuff of legend).

The Revenant hits theaters in limited release December 25 and opens nationwide January 2016. Check out the trailer below!
