American Ninja Warrior returns to NBC on August 22 and ANW trio Akbar Gbajabiamila, Matt Iseman and Kristine Leahy sat down with reporters last week at the Television Critics Association tour to talk about the hit show. I’ll be posting more coverage on American Ninja Warrior closer to the date, but I wanted to share my specific question to Kristine Leahy about what works regarding her chemistry with The Herd’s Colin Cowherd.

Colin Cowherd distinct point of view and various tangents on sports are his calling card, and now it’s great he has someone to balance him out. Leahy has been a welcome addition to The Herd With Colin Cowherd as she lets Colin be Colin while also keeping him in check on a daily basis. I asked Leahy the secret to her successful collaboration with Cowherd:

“Colin and I have a ton of respect for each other and we are friends on and off the air. The same conversations that we have on camera are the same exactly like the ones we’re having in the make-up room beforehand. And I think our minds are very similar . . .

When I’m looking at him and he’s talking, I can figure out where he’s coming from and how he got to that point of view. A lot of times I’ll challenge him on it which he appreciates because he needs – it actually (improves) his argument a lot of times if I poke holes in it and then he’s forced to fill them. Whenever I’m challenging him, we’re still such good friends and I think that’s the cool part that comes across that it’s never disrespectful. We’re always agreeing to disagree.”

Check out the video below as Leahy talks about her bond with Cowherd. Matt Iseman also issues a challenge to Cowherd, who claims he hasn’t seen American Ninja Warrior (I’m betting he’s checked it out, as Leahy claims it’s a “schtick”).
