In celebration of its 35th anniversary, Tokyo Pop will be released in theaters with a new 4K restoration courtesy of Kino Lorber. Directed by Fran Rubel Kuzui, Tokyo Pop hits New York’s BAM Rose Cinemas on August 4. A national expansion will follow after its August 11 release at the American Cinematheque in Los Angeles.

Tokyo Pop centers on Wendy (Carrie Hamilton), a wannabe rocker who leaves New York City for a life in Japan. She has dreams of becoming a great singer, but first she must pay her dues as she finds a job as a karoake bar waitress.

Diamond Yukai is Hiro, a fellow rock ‘n’ roller who forges a romantic and musical bond with Wendy. Will their music lead Wendy to continue a life in Tokyo? Or will that inevitable homesick feeling lead her back to The Big Apple?

Tokyo Pop received its share of critical praise during its released and it’s considered an underrated feature. I loved Kuzui’s 1992 feature Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and I’m looking forward to checking out Tokyo Pop.

Late actress Carrie Hamilton was the daughter of Carol Burnett, and Burnett is one of the people who helped fund the Indie Collect’s new 4K Restoration. The restoration, created in association with the Academy Film Archive, also received funding from Dolly Parton the HFPA Trust, and “donors to Indie Collect’s Jane Fonda Fund for Women Directors.”

Have you seen Tokyo Pop? If so, would love to hear your thoughts on the movie!
