The top headline for this Force of Nature post should have used Mel Gibson, but in fairness I don’t think I’m totally burying the lead. Gibson works with Kate Bosworth, Emile Hirsch, and director Michael Polish in the upcoming feature Force of Nature, and though he’s the obvious “star” in the flick, he’s joining a presumably well oiled trio (no double entendre intended!).

Director Michael Polish and actress/producer Kate Bosworth are married, and their extensive collaborations have yield the features Big Sur, Nona, Hot Bot and Amnesiac. The pair worked with Emile Hirsch on his music video “Love Is Real,” and they have all reunited for Force of Nature. Throw in Mel Gibson and a great character actor in David Zayas (Dexter) and you have a very promising feature.

Ray (Gibson) is a retired detective who refeuses to leave his apartment complex in the middle of a Category 5 hurricane. His doctor daughter Troy (Bosworth) is pleading with her dad to exit and a cop named Cardillo (Hirsch) is also trying to help her cause. Stormy weather, however, is the least of their problems as a group of criminals (led by Zayas) are attempting to find $55 million that is supposedly tucked away in the building.

Polish was a critic’s darling early in his career as he collaborated with his screenwriter brother Mark on such films as Twin Falls Idaho, Northfork, and The Astronaut Farmer. Although I proclaim myself to be a huge cinephile, Polish’s body of work has escaped me, so after checking out Force of Nature I’ll be looking forward to seeing his previous collaborations with Bosworth (and then return to his earliest films with his brother).

Bosworth (recently seen in the Netflix series The I-Land) and Hirsch were primed to be studio driven stars early in their careers, but both have been passionate about working in the independent film arena (check out Hirsch in The Motel Life and, more recently, Peel).

Force of Nature may describe the hurricane in the film, but Gibson himself is one of cinema’s most iconic figures. It will be interesting to see how all of these pieces fit together when Force of Nature, co-starring Will Catlett and Stephanie Cayo, hits Blu-ray and DVD on June 30.
