Danielle Macdonald has had quite the run the past several years, as she’s delivered quality work in Patti Cake$, Dumplin,’ and Bird Box. During the interviews for Skin, Macdonald talked about how the Hairspray influenced her own life.

Hitting theaters July 26, Skin centers on the true story of Bryon Widner (Jamie Bell), an individual who grew up with a white supremacist gang as his family. After meeting Julie (Danielle Macdonald), Bryon makes a concerted effort to start a new life while attempting to repent for the sins that he has committed.

Macdonald previously worked with the film’s director Guy Nattiv on the Oscar winning short Skin (both films, though dealing with the same themes of race, are two different narratives).

During the Skin press junket, I asked Macdonald to name one of her favorite films and she immediately chose Hairspray. The actress first saw Hairspray as a high school sophomore on Broadway and she loved the subsequent film.

“I didn’t see myself represented a lot growing up,” said Macdonald. “So I think that was hard. It was almost hard to be like how can I be an actor because I don’t see people like me acting on screen?”

That lack of representation served as an inspiration for Macdonald to work on Dumplin,’ and check out the audio below as she gives her full answer regarding Hairspray:

Skin, which is currently available on DIRECTV Cinema, hits theaters July 26.
