As witnessed in The Neon Demon and a slew of other films, Elle Fanning is always up for an artistic challenge. Can she convince us that she’s a budding pop star in Teen Spirit? Check out the trailer and judge for yourself!

Teen Spirit centers on Violet (Elle Fanning), a reserved teenager who leaves her small town to pursue her singing passions. With an unpredictable manager (Zlatko Burić) in tow, Violet enters a local singing competition with hopes for the big time. Rebecca Hall, a criminally underrated actress who should have received an Oscar nod for 2016’s Christine, co-stars in the feature as the music power player who, as the trailer suggests, may drive a wedge between Violet and her manager. Directed and penned by actor Max Minghella (The Handmaid’s Tale), the feature contains music from Tegan & Sara, Annie Lennox, Orbital, Carly Rae Jepsen, and Sigrid. The movie’s locale, the Isle of Wight, was the hometown of Minghella’s later father Anthony Minghella (director of The English Patient and The Talented Mr. Ripley).
The new trailer has Fanning taking on Ellie Goulding’s smash pop song “Lights,” and though she may not have soaring, knock down the roof vocals, she knows how to carry a tune (and a British accent to boot!). Check out the trailer and tell us what you think!
Teen Spirit hits theaters April 5.
