Before he became known as one of cinema’s finest filmmakers, director Louis Malle was also a French New Wave trendsetter thanks to the film noir classic Elevator to the Gallows. The new digital restoration of the film, which is headlined by Jeanne Moreau, has its exclusive engagement starting today at Landmark’s Nuart Theatre thanks to Rialto Pictures.
Shot in 1958 by Malle when he was just 24 (the same age Orson Welles made Citizen Kane), the narrative centers on an industrialist’s wife (Moreau) who, in the midst of an affair with an ex-paratrooper (Maurice Ronet), is plotting the murder of her husband (Jean Wall). With the right planning, the operation has the makings of the proverbial “perfect murder,” but a fateful turn of events may seal fate.
