Chris Pine, Casey Affleck, and Eric Bana star in The Finest Hours, an action-thriller that is based on the true story of the Coast Guard’s 1952 rescue mission of the SS Pendleton, a T-2 oil tanker that was headed for Boston.
After a deadly store ripped the tanker in two, Coast Guard Captain Bernie Webber (Pine) heads up the perilous, four-man rescue mission. Affleck is Ray Sybert, the first assistant engineer of the SS Pendleton, and Bana is Warrant Officer Daniel Cluff, the man who orders the rescue. Craig Gillespie, whose previous credits include Million Dollar Arm, Fright Night, and Lars and the Real Girl, is the director.
“We wanted to be very specific, very clear and technically accurate with events involving the real people in the story,” said Gillespie, as quoted in the film’s production notes. “Being able to get those nuances and truths make the story all the more interesting while allowing us to present unique and authentic individuals.”
