In his director’s statement, Dave Franco said that the inspiration behind The Rental lies in his “paranoia about the concept of home-sharing.” The trailer to the horror-thriller is pretty chilling and well put together, so I’m guessing this 88-minute thriller could be something special.
The Rental, penned by Dave Franco and Joe Swanberg, centers on two couples (Alison Brie and Dan Stevens, Sheila Vand and Jeremy Allen White) who are ready for some fun with their gorgeous rental house. Far away from the city and out in nature should lead to a tranquil time, but things go south when after they discover their host (Toby Huss) might by spying on them.
Franco cites Hereditary and Blue Ruin as films that inspired the tone behind The Rental, and his goal is to elevate the horror-thriller genre with his narrative.
A special advance drive-in screening and Q&A will be held Thursday June 18th at 8:30 pm at Vineland Drive-In, (for tickets go here) and the movie hits select drive-ins, theaters and On Demand July 24 via IFC Films.
