Nick Gehlfuss and Brian Tee star in Chicago Med, the latest series from prolific TV writer/producer Dick Wolf (Chicago P.D., Chicago Fire). In prep for their roles, the actors shadowed medical professionals (Tee spent time at Whittier Presbyterian and Gehlfuss did research at Cook County).
Tee plays Dr. Ethan Choi, a former Navy flight surgeon who found a higher calling in the medical field. For Tee, the key to his job on the show is to bring a level of truth to the proceedings and honor the medical professionals they are trying to emulate:
“What I actually learned as far as being able to shadow in a hospital is, let’s be real, they’re the true heroes and we kind of imitate them. I think what Dick Wolf and all the writers and producers really want, and what they’ve done with other shows, is to bring that level of authenticity. The fact that we’re able to shadow them and bring that to light as far as our characters our concerned – I think if we represent them in a way that is so integral and authentic to what they really do, then we’ve done our jobs.”
Dr. Will Halstead (Gehlfuss), Chicago Med’s chief ER resident, is the brother of Det. Jay Halstead (Jesse Lee Soffer), and his character has already been introduced in Chicago P.D. In the video below, Gehlfuss recounts a funny incident which occurred when he tried to portray a medical student in real life. Though Gehlfuss is a solid actor, going undetected in a hospital can only go so far, especially when a stethoscope gets in the way. Check out the vid for further clarification:
Chicago Med premieres tonight on NBC (9 pm et/pt).
