While promoting Chicago Fire at this month’s NBCUniversal Press Tour, Jesse Spencer admitted a couple of eye opening facts (at least in my eyes): 1. He thought Chicago Fire would last just one season and 2. Deep Dish Pizza is not exactly his food of choice!! Check out the two videos below (as well as the transcripts).

Now in its eighth season, Chicago Fire is “still growing,” but during its early days Jesse Spencer did not have epic expectations for the beloved program:

I thought it would go for a season. I thought I was doing it for a year (laughs). It just steadily grew, and we’re still growing. So it’s just fantastic.

The heart and soul of the show is the family. It’s One Chicago, One Family. That is what people watch for. They’re watching more or less their own family on screen but just with a different vocation, you know?

And the fans have been very loyal. We portray firefighters in a great light and that’s great for the fire department. No one hates a fireman unless you’re an arsonist fireman and then all the other fireman hate you.

As a fan of deep dish pizza (my expanding waistline is proof), I was aghast at Spencer’s candid (and obviously humorous) take on the city’s most signature cuisine. “No one’s falling in love with deep dish,” laughed Spencer. “Sorry Chicago!”

Though Spencer throws his share of love for steakhouses, Italian food (he cites Viaggo as a place to go), and sushi, the damage has been done! I joked with Spencer about putting the video up and he completely gave the go ahead, jokingly remarking that he’s given his share of love and props to Chicago.

Are you a fan of Chicago Fire and do you agree with Spencer’s take on Deep Dish Pizza? Feel free to comment and offer up your take!!

Chicago Fire airs Wednesday evenings on NBC (9 pm et/pt).
