A film that I can’t get out of my head (in a good way) is director Victor Levin’s disarmingly romantic, evocative, and blissfully wistful drama 5 to 7I recently had the pleasure of meeting Levin and actress Bérénice Marlohe and I’ve posted the full video interview below.

5 to 7 tells the New York set tale of Brian (Anton Yelchin), a frustrated twenty-something writer whose short stories remain unpublished. His creative and romantic journey takes a profound turn for the better upon meeting Arielle (Bérénice Marlohe), a self-assured French woman who, though married, enters a relationship with the aforementioned scribe.

What begins as a “5 to 7” tryst becomes an altogether different equation, as the pair’s connection can best be summed up by that Donny Hathaway lyric from “A Song For You” (“I love you in a place where there’s no space or time”).

The clip is below, and I’ve also inserted a full breakdown of the subjects that’s covered in the video:

  1. (0 – 1:20) Bérénice Marlohe on playing her character in “5 to 7.” I also briefly alluded to the classic “Jules and Jim,” which is referenced in “5 to 7.”
  2. (1:33 – 2:33) Bérénice Marlohe on connecting to the vulnerability and intimacy of the story and how the language of cinema has a universal connection.
  3. (3:02 – 4:10) Director Victor Levin on his visual scope for New York City and making it an intimate space in “5 to 7.”
  4. (4:31 – 7:09) Marlohe and Levin talk about shooting the film’s most ambitious sequence, which has Brian and Arielle walking and talking throughout Central Park. Levin also credits cinematographer Arnaud Potier and the actors for pulling off the scene.
  5. (7:28 – 8:46) Levin on how memory plays an important part of “5 to 7.”  “Just because things change doesn’t mean they lose their value,” says Levin. “You must, you should, it’s good for you, to carry them with you, wherever you go.”
  6. (9:02 – 10:26) Bérénice Marlohe on why she loved the storyline of “5 to 7.” “It’s a beautiful topic – talking about eternity,” says Marlohe. “And I believe that (with) love, there is no end, you know?”
