I should have used “Under The Milky Way” for the title to generate more hits, but that would do disservice to the overall brilliance of the Church’s seminal album Starfish. The outfit hits the U.S. late September for a series of dates to celebrates Starfish’s 30th anniversary.
The group will perform all of the tracks in their entirety along with other selections taken from their 38 year career. Though “Under The Milky Way” and “Reptile” were the biggest hits on Starfish, my personal favorites are “Hotel Womb” (the album’s closer) and Marty-Willson Piper’s catchy rocker “Spark” (the guitarist left the band in 2013 and was replaced by former Powderfinger member Ian Haug).
Starfish’s beauty lies in its pure transcendence, as the album, like the beautiful musical landscapes created by David Bowie and Brian Eno, continues to transfix with its sonic introspections. For a no holds barred account on the making of Starfish, check out this piece from The Sydney Morning Herald.
Guitarist Peter Koppes, one of the group’s founding members, summarizes the band’s continuing popularity: “Music is like inner space and we’re astronauts. It’s a spellbinding thing, it’s hypnotizing. That’s why people like it. It takes them into another world and we’re here to open those doors.” The group’s current members include Koppes, co-founder Steve Kilbey, drummer Tim Powles, and Haug.
The band begins their U.S. track with a stop in Long Beach, Ca. at the Music Tastes Good Fest. They remain in California for an October 1 performance at The Chapel (San Francisco, CA) before hitting the road for a Portland, OR date at Aladdin Theater. Their U.S. trek ends with a two day stop at New York City’s Winery (October 25-26).

Steve Kilbey: Songs, Stories & Spells
Accompanied by Rodrigo Bustos, Steve'll trawl through 40 years of melodies, memories & malarkey.
New songs, dusted old ‘never played before’ numbers, plus a smattering of other people's tunes, this is an evening of deep cuts & revelation.
