Taking Back Sunday are back with Tidal Wave, their first album since their creatively inspired (and resonant) 2014 release Happiness Is… In support of their new album, the group are transitioning from their co-headlining run with Dashboard Confessional on the Taste of Chaos Tour with a more intimate set of dates. Their first stop is a September 17 performance at Omaha, Nebraska’s The Waiting Room.

During an interview with Entertainment Weekly, frontman Adam Lazzara elaborated on how the outfit’s sound and aesthetic has grown over their years (Tidal Wave is their seventh album). “With our first records, we’re writing from the perspective of 17, 18-year-old kids and now it’s like as you grow older the blinders get pulled back and you have a different way of looking at the world around you,” said Lazzara, who added that the initial run of their Tidal Wave tour will be playing in ‘the smallest clubs we can go to.’ “There’s more of an Americana feel.”

Guitarist John Nolan adds that Tidal Wave continues the band’s maturation and sonic evolution from their last album: “I think this idea of making songs that we wrote for ourselves started with Happiness Is…, and since the reaction to that album was so positive it really encouraged to take that step further with this album.”

One of Taking Back Sunday’s strengths is creating anthemic and emotive compositions without sacrificing substance. Many pop driven hits come and go like the wind, but the group’s strongest material continues to, like a “tidal wave,” continues to make an impact (sorry for the pun!).

Tidal Wave comes out September 16 via Hopeless Records.
