I would say one of the more influential movies for me was The Fountain. It’s a movie by Darren Aronofsky and I remember seeing that and it changed my world when it came to how you can tell a story on film. This is a sidebar but it takes place in space and they basically said, ‘well we basically don’t know what a supernova looks like because it’s a star going into a star’ so Darren Aronofsky and (his) team they came up with the idea with ‘well we think we know all of the elements that make up life and space and all that stuff, so whatever that thing looks like it’s going to be made up of the same chemicals that make up our world.” So they just literally, using a micro-camera, filmed chemical reactions and then put those in the background of the spaceship as it’s flying to this dying star. And I think about that know and I’m just going ‘that’s art, seeing the story and the way it interweaves.’ It really opened up my mind and changed my world. It’s a very emotional movie for me.” – Samuel Hunt

I checked out The Fountain at a screening, with Aronofsky introducing the Hugh Jackman and Rachel Weisz film. It was evident that Aronofsky was psyched for the audience and media members to see his ambitious narrative. I was blown away by the flick and actually covered the press junket. I honestly thought it would receive a ton of critical acclaim and do well in theaters, but it only made $15.9 million worldwide (on a $36 million budget)! I’m glad Hunt singled out this film, and hopefully The Fountain has gained in stature over the years.
