Kristen Bell has done her share of successful programs (House of Lies, Veronica Mars, and the voice of Gossip Girl), and now she has another hit with NBC’s The Good Place. The series returns tonight (8:30 pm et/pt), and during the interview Bell gave an interesting read on The Good Place.
The Good Place centers on Eleanor (Kristen Bell), a career driven and selfish woman who dies and finds herself in a paradise designed by a brilliant and eccentric architect named Michael (Ted Danson). Eleanor understandably feels out of place in this environment filled with kindhearted folks, and her struggles between the “good” and “bad” place one of the show’s recurring themes.
Though some viewers may deem Eleanor as unlikable (she’s ends up being very charming in my opinion), Bell sees her character’s motivations as universal:
“Life is, a lot of times, about comparison. You compare yourself that are better than you, that are worse than you. Because we are striving, as a species, for ranking at all times. We want to know who’s above us. Who is alpha. Who is below us. What we can gain (and) what we can lose. We, as a species, are obsessed with that. (The Good Place) is not a comment on it but an exploration of it.” – Kristen BellÂ
