Featuring animation from illustrator Ralph Steadman and a healthy share of participants (including Shane MacGowan’s lifelong friend Johnny Depp), Crock of Gold is an immersive and engaging look at MacGowan’s colorful life.

With his trademark confidence and showmanship, MacGowan was a force of nature, and that punk rock energy remains even as the iconic figure is now in his early 60s (the documentary spotlights his star studded 60th birthday celebration).

“I think without that dedication it’s hard to get anywhere,” said director Julien Temple. “Hopefully the film is a little bit about the nature of creativity and what you have to give up in order to achieve. Or what you have to reach for and what dangers it can open up for you. I think Shane’s story, on the one hand it is a triumph, but on the other hand it’s a tragedy.”
