Luz: The Flower of Evil filmmaker Juan Diego Escobar Alzate joins us on Find Your Film to talk about his visually rich narrative. Co-host Eric Holmes championed the feature for months, with Bruce Purkey and I jumping on the bandwagon sooner than later. Alzate is a candid and amiable cinephile, and we have our extensive talk below in video and audio form.

With a lifelong passion for Spaghetti Westerns and Giallo cinema, Juan Diego Escobar Alzate knows a thing or two about visual composition. Luz: The Flower of Evil, however, goes deeper than its eye-catching aesthetic and provides the viewer a gritty and original look at faith and nature’s intricate relationship.

Alzate’s biggest cinematic influences are Alejandro Jodorowsky, Terrence Malick, and Dario Argento. With the different versions of Blu-rays and DVDs he has released of Luz: The Flower of Evil, Alzate is also a physical media enthusiast. Thus, he is tried and true cinephile along with being an original storyteller.

I was expecting a surreal horror feature from Luz: The Flower of Evil but the narrative goes an entirely different direction. Co-host Bruce Purkey mentioned during the interview that he appreciated the film upon a second viewing, and Eric Holmes has seen the flick countless times.

“For me, filmmaking is not about shooting with the best camera or the best gear or whatever,” said Alzate. “Or telling the best story. For me, filmmaking is something that comes from the heart.”
