One of the biggest takeaways from The Finest Hours, which is now playing nationwide, is that Holliday Grainger is a star in the making. Though the meat of the film deals with the true story of the U.S. Coast Guard’s bold rescue of the SS Pendleton, the picture also has a wonderful romantic subplot with Coast Guard Bernie Webber (Chris Pine) and his resilient fiancee Miriam (Grainger).

Director Craig Gillespie and his production team build a believable world of 1952 Massachusetts, and Grainger seems right at home in the era. In a movie filled with men struggling to survive on the choppy waters, Grainger holds her own on shore as Miriam gets a healthy amount of screen time.

During the interviews for The Finest Hours, Grainger was self-deprecating regarding her work in the film, and she even credited cinematographer Javier Aguirresarobe for lighting her in beautiful fashion for the film:

He’s an absolute genius. He managed to make – I mean I know when I look tired. You can definitely see (with) the harbor scenes. My eyes, when I’m tired, I think my left eye slightly shrinks, bizarrely . . . but I think somehow he managed to light me so that my bags didn’t show. I don’t know! (laughs) I was tired!
