Disney and Pixar’s “Soul” introduces Joe Gardner (voice of Jamie Foxx), a middle-school band teacher. When he gets the chance of a lifetime to play with Dorothea Williams (voice of Angela Bassett) at the best jazz club in town, he believes his life is finally going to change. Globally renowned musician Jon Batiste provides the original jazz compositions and arrangements for the film and Oscar®-winners Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross from Nine Inch Nails compose the score. “Soul” will debut exclusively on Disney+ (where Disney+ is available) on December 25, 2020. ©2020 Disney/Pixar. In Disney and Pixar’s “Soul,” Joe Gardner (voice of Jamie Foxx), a middle-school band teacher in New York City, makes one small misstep and ends up in The Great Before, a fantastical place where new souls get their personalities, quirks and interests before they go to Earth. There, he meets Terry (voice of Rachel House), who is charged with the singular duty of keeping track of the entrants to The Great Beyond. Determined to return to his life, Joe teams up with a precocious soul, 22 (voice of Tina Fey) to show her what’s great about living. Directed by Academy Award® winner Pete Docter, co-directed by Kemp Powers and produced by Academy Award® nominee Dana Murray, p.g.a., “Soul” will debut exclusively on Disney+ (where Disney+ is available) on December 25, 2020. ©2020 Disney/Pixar. The good news is that Bruce Purkey and Eric Holmes both recommend Disney and Pixar’s Soul (I was mixed on it). We spent a healthy portion of the episode discussing the flawes behind Wonder Woman 1984, and Bruce does a movie rewind on The Head Hunter. Both Eric and Bruce love The Head Hunter, and I’m looking foward to watching them once I finally subscribe to Shudder.

With Find Your Film, we are trying to keep our streak alive of at least mentioning Dario Argento and Mario Bava in our pods. This week Bruce reviews A Bay of Blood, a Bava feature which was a huge influence for slasher films. For his weekly What’s In The Box segment, Bruce reviewed The Company of Wolves (thanks to Jezpurr Quinn!). To give movie recommendations for Bruce to put in the box, email him at brucepurkey@gmail.com.

Last but not least, Eric and I review The Great Silence, a Sergio Corbucci directed Western that is an absolute must see. I checked it out recently on Kanopy, but as of this post date it is available for streaming on Hoopla and is out on Blu-ray via Film Movement. The third act of this feature is worth the price of admission, and one of the disc’s special features (where Repo Man director Alex Cox discusses the film) is worth checking out. Since it’s not available on Kanopy, I will be purchasing the Blu-ray.

Eric Holmes loves providing a thematic through line for our episodes, so since I urged him to check out The Great Silence, he decided to top it off by purchasing Cemetery Without Crosses at EntertainMart. It’s another Spaghetti Western, and this Blu-ray is from Arrow Home Video. I will check it out first on Amazon Prime Video before deciding whether to purchase the flick. Holmes gives it a strong recommendation, so the safe bet is I’ll be purchasing The Great Silence and Cementery Without Crosses on Blu-ray.

Find Your Film Episode December 31, 2020
0:00 – Happy Holidays!
1:11 – Eric Holmes has dubbed himself this week “Handsome Man,” which is reference to a character in Wonder Woman 1984.
1:40 – Our main review this episode will be for Soul.
1:58 – Eric Holmes talks about sheltering in place and working on his board game.
3:21 – Eric and I will be reviewing the Sergio Corbucci film The Great Silence.
3:55 – Bruce Purkey has been working on his top 25 movies and it will be featured on his YouTube channel Rustomire.
4:34 – Eric and I joke to Bruce that Fatman, Tenet, and The Painted Bird are his favorite movies of 2020 (they are not).
5:13 – Eric loves Tenet “a lot” but he loves the Find Your Film meme regarding the film (Purkey infamously said “Tenet is a Turd”). Holmes brings in a Steely Dan reference.
7:02 – The first movie rewind is Dial Code Santa Claus (aka Deadly Games) from Eric Holmes (Bruce saw it the precious week). Picture, which came out in 1989, is now streaming on Shudder. Holmes said this would be a perfect Midnight Movie choice. Overall, Holmes gives it a light recommendation.
9:26 – Bruce really digs Deadly Games and really went for the tone of the film.
10:19 – Purkey’s movie rewind is The Head Hunter which Eric saw last week. This feature is currently streaming on Shudder.
17:41 – We discuss what makes Wonder Woman 1984 an underwhelming experience for all of us.
20:12 – “It’s a bad movie” – Purkey.
20:30 – “It was a waste of my time.” – Srisavasdi
20:59 – “There’s bad lessons in this movie.” – Holmes
39:44 – We review the Disney Pixar feature Soul.
42:11 – “The animation in (Soul) is fantastic.” – Holmes, who gives it a “strong recommend.”
44::43 – “It’s good but not great.” – Purkey who preferred the earth bound scenes over the Great Beyond/Before sequences.
49:00 – Though value added for kids, I was disappointed with Soul’s story execution.\
55:17 – Bruce Purkey continues our weekly devotion to Mario Bava with A Bay of Blood. Btw, this movie has a connection to Steven Spielberg’s E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial.
61:21 – Eric Holmes reviews Cemetery Without Crosses, which is available on Blu-ray via Arrow Video. It’s also streaming on Amazon Prime Video.
70:26 – Bruce recommends Nocturnal Animals which just dropped on Netflix. He loves the final shot of the movie, which he understands can be divisive. 3.5-4 star rating from Bruce.
77:15 – Eric Holmes and I discuss the Sergio Corbucci Western The Great Silence. This is a must see film if you are a fan of the Quentin Tarantino movie The Hateful Eight.
84:04 – For Bruce Purkey’s What’s In The Box segment, he reviews The Company of Wolves (chose by Jezpurr Quinn).
85:54 – The feature is directed by Neil Jordan and I have a quick comment on interviewing him way back when!
93:43 – Next week Bruce will review Wild Style for “What’s In The Box.” Thanks to Brian O’Connell for that selection!!
94:09 – Eric Holmes has chosen Oscar Micheaux for our next director’s spotlight. We will cover Within Our Gates and Body and Soul.
96:00 – Eric also wanted to plug William Lindus’ Top 20 of 2020. Lindus is a co-host of Movie Bears Podcast, and we give love to that pod to close out!
