This is a total first regarding my requisite “name one of your favorite movies” questions, as Brooklyn Nine-Nine actress Stephanie Beatriz picked The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part as her choice!

Stephanie Beatriz’s low as one can go voice in playing Rosa Diaz is one of Brooklyn Nine-Nine’s many hallmarks (if you watch the show, that’s not her real voice!). An animated role was inevitable thanks to her vocal dexterity, and in The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part she plays General Mayhem. Picking your one film as one of your favorite movies may scream narcissism, but honestly she makes a great point with her choice! Transcript and video is below!

Stephanie Beatriz on The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part

“I’m going to plug myself right now – Lego Movie 2. I did a voice in that franchise in the newest one that just came out. I actually really really enjoyed doing it, not only because I really like doing animated voices and doing voiceover but I also find that the message of that particular movie is really beautiful and timely. We are living in a society in which everyone is kind of sort of saying ‘I know how to do this right, and everyone should do it my way.’ The message of that film is how do you learn how to play nice with others even if they don’t see the world the way that you do?

How do you learn to come to a middle ground, because otherwise we will just destroy each other. The middle ground is the most important place to be and reaching out a hand to other people – and to playmates, or sisters or brothers or people you don’t even know and (say) ‘I’m willing to see the world through your eyes – tell me what you have to say.’

We are living in a really horrible time in which people are writing each other off and we’re writing each other off as human beings and that is the worst and saddest thing we can do. This movie, in a really beautiful and childlike way asks you to examine how many times you’ve been guilty of writing someone off and whether or not you can extend a hand and play nice with others.”

What are some of your favorite films and what do they mean to you? With Flick City, my goal is to get as many actors and filmmakers (and ultimately fellow cinephiles) to discuss movies they absolutely love. Feel free to comment below!
