Fans have been clamoring for a follow-up to Failure’s beloved 1996 album Fantastic Planet, those wishes will be realized this summer. The Heart Is A Monster, a new Failure project from the Los Angeles based trio of Ken Andrews, Greg Edwards, and Kellii Scott, comes out June 30.

“Trying to follow up ‘Fantastic Planet’ was a bit daunting,” said Edwards, who mixed the 18-track album with his fellow bandmates serving as the producers. “We’ve pushed the bar upward again, but at the same time, we’ve kept the signature sound of the band intact.”
Their gripping, sonic infused aesthetic is displayed throughout “Fantastic Planet,” most notably in their signature tunes “Another Space Song,” “The Nurse Who Loved Me,” and “Stuck On You.” During the band’s 17 plus year absence, their music has been covered by A Perfect Circle (“The Nurse Who Loved Me”) and Paramore (“Stuck On You”).
Edwards also added that the new album features a shift from the “outer space” of “Fantastic Planet” to “inner planet,” saying that the band have “used instrumentation in the service of mood and emotion to an even greater degree than our previous records.” The group started work on the album in late 2013.

Failure’s continuing allure doesn’t solely rest on their indelible sound, as their lyrics are just as memorable (and occasionally gut-wrenching). For example, one only has to read the opening lyrics of “Stuck On You” to hopefully support my assertion:
“I heard you driving in my carThen in a frozen barI claimed I didn’t care for youBut your verse got trapped inside my headOver and over againYou played yourself to death in me”
