Whether you call it old school, the roots of Country, or a “vintage sound,” The Voice contestant Cody Wickline is one of this season’s most unique artists. A lifelong listener to such artists as Hank Williams Sr. and George Jones, Wickline garnered a four chair turn for his memorable (and subtle) rendition of the George Jones classic “He Stopped Loving Her Today.”

After the Blind Auditions, the Beckley, West Virginia native teamed with fellow Team Blake member Matt Snook for a spirited version of Randy Houser’s hit song “How Country Feels” (after Wickline gave Christina Aguilera a seductive look during the performance, Aguilera called him a “cutie.”).

Now Wickline is attempting to advance past the Knockouts and continue on the the Live Rounds with Blake Shelton as his coach, and during our interview he talked about his lifelong love for country music, learning from other artists on The Voice, and having the guts to playfully flirt with Aguilera.

Wickline also had an interesting take on performing. Instead of being riddled with nerves or stage fright, the singer prefers performing to a large audience. “What I tend to enjoy the most is being able to absorb the energy from the audience and throw it back at ’em,” says the singer. “That’s what gets me excited.”

My full interview with the soft-spoken yet subtly confident Cody Wickline is below:

The Voice’s Knockout Rounds begins Monday, March 23 on NBC (8 pm et/pt).
