To immerse herself in the story, Kruger spent six months of pre-production getting ready for the Fatih Akin directed and Hamburg set project. Research included attending self-help groups in New York and temporarily returning to temporarily live in Germany (she hasn’t resided in her home country for over 25 years).

“As time passed and I was able to observe and witness what those families were going through and listening to the individual stories,” said Kruger. “It kind of started to creep up in me and haunt me. The stories – I couldn’t think about anything else. Slowly but surely, I got there. I realized what they were going through. Vengeance is a feeling that most people have in one shape or form”
