Actor Chiwetel Ejifor (12 Years a Slave, Redbelt) was in Los Angeles to promote his upcoming drama Z for Zachariah, a post apocalyptic drama based on the novel by late writer Robert C. O’BrienDuring the interview I asked several questions about the first rate feature, which co-stars Margot Robbie and Chris Pine, and I’ll share these audio clips in the coming days (the movie comes out August 28).
But let’s start off with Ejiofor’s foray into another drama – Secret In Their Eyes.

Secret In Their Eyes

Based on the Oscar winning Argentine film El Secreto de sus Ojos, Secret in their Eyes is directed by Shattered Glass filmmaker Billy Ray. Although the original feature had, along with its crime thriller elements, a sense of romanticism and wistful nostalgia, Ray’s features (he also directed Breach) are tough nosed, gritty narratives, and it will be interesting how he, along with actors Ejiofor, Julia Roberts, and Nicole Kidman explore creative avenues with such a memorable story.

I asked Ejiofor about Secret In Their Eyes, and he answered as follows:

I think what Billy Ray’s done in sort of Americanizing that film is really interesting as a kind of exercise. Because the original is such a great movie – so it’s not just sort of transplanting the original into the States. It’s really Americanizing those kind of ideas and I think that is what’s so fascinating. When one watches that film, if it’s side by side with the original, I think it’s very interesting – just the differences – the psychological differences between Argentina and America.
