Already generating great word of mouth prior to its June 19 release, Dope centers on Malcolm (Shameik Moore), an Inglewood, CA. resident with big dreams of attending Harvard. An invitation to an underground party leads to a series of potentially dangerous (and often humorous) escapades for Malcolm and his friends (Kiersey Clemons, Tony Revolori). During a recent roundtable interview with Moorehe talked about the lessons he learned about playing a leading man in Dope.

Shameik Moore’s acting education was spearheaded by his discussions with director Rick Famuyiwa. If one has the benefit of being the lead actor in a film, he or she must set an energetic, hard-working tone on the set.

“You’ve got to reach out to people,” said Moore. “You’ve got to create that energy between everybody . . . you’re the connection. You’re the heart of the movie. That’s what a leading man is.”

Click on the Soundcloud audio below to hear Moore’s full answer to the leading man question. The thuds on the clip are from Moore banging his hand on the table for effect, but I love this clip so I’m still more than happy to share:
