“The Man” can be racism, inequality, or whatever holds us back in general, and The Banker sheds a light on the audacious exploits of businessmen Bernard Garrett (Anthony Mackie) and Joe Morris (Samuel L. Jackson) in the 1960s. The true story, which reunities Mackie with The Adjustment Bureau filmmaker George Nolfi, is headed to theaters next month.

Businessmen Bernard Garrett (Anthony Mackie) and Joe Morris (Samuel L. Jackson) had a dream of helping African Americans pursue their respective dreams, but getting loans from the bank in the 1960s was an uphill climb due to the oppressive climate of the day. Along with the help of Garrett’s wife Eunice (Nia Long), they train a white man named Matt (Nicholas Hoult) to be their front while Garrett and Morris pose as a janitor and chauffeur.

Buying a bank inevitably draws the attention of the federal government, and now the group most do whatever it takes to keep the ambitions afloat.

The Banker hits theaters in December 5 and debuts on Apple TV+ come January 2020. Though I have my own reservations about the glut of streaming services, it is great to see original movies with topline stars get greenlit, and hopefully Apple TV+ becomes another content creation output for cinema.
